As we've talked about several times recently, the latest WRT54G (version 5) is no longer Linux based nor upgradeable to third-party firmware. Linksys hear the cries of us firmware gurus and decided to re-brand the WRT54Gv4 to the WRT54GL. Linksys decided to switch to VxWorks (the OS WRT54Gv5 runs on) to reduce bill of materials costs. Linksys sells hundreds of thousands of WRT54Gs a month and the VxWorks switch was well worth it. Mani Dhillon, Linksys' Director of Narketing said, "We still wanted to have a Linux SKU for the Linux audience. In general, we want to make sure our Linux community is protected." Dhillon added they plan to sell 10,000 WRT54GLs a month, "if we're lucky". Clearly Linksys is not planning to sell or make much profit off the WRT54GL.
