Tom's Networking Reviews New WRTSL54GS
hardware | 21 Oct 2005 CST | pip
hardware icon Toms's Networking posted a review today about the new Linksys WRTSL54GS. It's a new router with a UPnP media server in it. The design is the new silver design, not classic blue. It features SecureEasySetup and WPA2. Among with the regular Ethernet connectors, it includes a USB 2.0 port. Which could be great for the hacking community. It features a Broadcom BCM4704KPB and 32MB of RAM. Although it's noted in the article you maybe able to add more. The web interface is similiar to the WRT54G with media settings added. It should be released this holiday season with a price around $100.

Linksys Talks about WRT54GL
hardware | 11 Jun 2006 CST | pip
hardware icon As we've talked about several times recently, the latest WRT54G (version 5) is no longer Linux based nor upgradeable to third-party firmware. Linksys hear the cries of us firmware gurus and decided to re-brand the WRT54Gv4 to the WRT54GL. Linksys decided to switch to VxWorks (the OS WRT54Gv5 runs on) to reduce bill of materials costs. Linksys sells hundreds of thousands of WRT54Gs a month and the VxWorks switch was well worth it. Mani Dhillon, Linksys' Director of Narketing said, "We still wanted to have a Linux SKU for the Linux audience. In general, we want to make sure our Linux community is protected." Dhillon added they plan to sell 10,000 WRT54GLs a month, "if we're lucky". Clearly Linksys is not planning to sell or make much profit off the WRT54GL. He also said there is no availability guarantees for the WRT54GL. So stock up now.

Godfather of Linksys Open Source Talks
site update | 20 Oct 2005 CST | pip
site update icon Columbia Law School Professor Eben Moglen was recently interviewed by Forbes magazine. I doubt many of you know him but without him this site wouldn't exist. Nor would any of the third-party firmware currently out there. In 2003, he forced Cisco to "... play by the rules" and release their source code. The article talks about how the FCC is concerned about third-party firmware that creates mesh networks. It also calls the WRT54G what the "Model A Ford was for hotrodders in an earlier era--a highly adaptable platform for experimentation".

It also includes "SES" (SecureEasySetup) which is supposed to help you with network security. The router hits stores today. Prices starting around $80. Froogle has already has several matches.

WRT54G Version 5 Released
hardware | 29 Sep 2005 CST | pip
hardware icon Today, Linksys updated their official web site to reflect that the fifth version of the WRT54G has been released. Version 4s are still fairly new and some would wonder why they are releasing a new version so quickly. Version 5 requires completely new firmware (1.0.0) so it would appear the hardware differences are not minor. We would not recommend flashing new firmware to a version five as current firmware releases would likely cause damage. There is currently no way to tell the difference between a version five and other models but if Linksys continues their serial number scheme, version five should be CDFB.

Linksys and Vonage Team Up with Trade-In Program
site update | 11 Jun 2006 CST | pip
site update icon To promote the new WRTP54G, Linksys and Vonage have teamed up. Calling the trade-in program "G for Free". First, buy a WRTP54G. Then, sign up for Vonage and stay active for 90 days. After 90 days, you can send in a rebate and Linksys will give you $50. Do the following, but also send in your old wireless router and get $100. Which means you can get the WRTP54G for $29.99 after rebates and trade-in. Not a bad deal. However, the WRTP54G does not appear in the GPL area. Which means, unless they simply haven't added the WRTP to the GPL center, that you can't flash third-party firmware to the WRTP. For more details, visit http://www.linksys.com/tradein

Want more RAM? Flip in an SD Card?!?!?
hardware | 17 May 2005 CST | pip
hardware icon Recently, a page with details on how to MOD your WRT54G to be able to use SD cards to add more RAM as been floating around. Probably the best thing you could do to your WRT54G. Clearly not for beginners. You'll need a WRT54Gv2. Also, it wouldn't work on your average Linksys or for that matter, any other firmware package. Out of the box at least. But if you feel brave enough, go to http://kiel.kool.dk:27/ for more details.
